Bagna Cäuda di Monale

Why it's special

Many villages hold their bagna cauda in autumn; Monale's Pro Loco has made its own the event of the winter, and had reached its 36th edition by 2025. The menu is a full old-style Piedmontese feast: cold cuts, bagna cauda with over fifteen vegetables, broth, bollito misto with bagnetto, and pears cooked in wine, with Barbera d'Asti.

Monale is a small village in the hills north-west of Asti, and its Pro Loco has made bagna cauda its event of the winter. Every January, over three weekends, the hall of the Canonica next to the sports fields is set for Saturday dinners and Sunday lunches, and the 2025 edition was the thirty-sixth.

The menu is the long Piedmontese feast-day kind: mixed cold cuts to start, then bagna cauda the old way, the hot sauce of anchovies, garlic and oil with more than fifteen raw and cooked vegetables to dip, a light broth, bollito misto with green bagnetto sauce and salad, and pears cooked in wine to finish, with Barbera d'Asti on the table.

The same Pro Loco runs Monale's carnival parade later in the winter, and the village's Santa Caterina patronal feast falls at the end of November.
