Why it's special

It is Asti's own version of the Vienna New Year's concert, a fixture of the city's calendar for well over a decade, played in the Teatro Alfieri. The orchestra keeps it light, with jokes and sketches between pieces and a rousing finale, and at the interval it has offered everyone a glass of Asti spumante and local sweets.

Every 1 January at five in the afternoon, the Orchestra Sinfonica di Asti (O.S.A.) plays its New Year's concert in the Teatro Alfieri. The format follows the Vienna original: waltzes, polkas and marches by the Strauss family, including On the Beautiful Blue Danube, mixed in recent years with pieces by Mozart, Rossini, Tchaikovsky or Shostakovich.

What makes it Asti's own is the tone. Under its principal conductor Silvano Pasini, the orchestra fills the evening with gags and little scenes between the players, the conductor and the audience, and builds to a finale meant to sweep the whole audience along. At the interval of the 2026 concert, the audience was offered a toast with Asti spumante from a local producer and sweets from an Asti torroneria.
