The Mercato Europeo is a travelling market run by FIVA Confcommercio that pitches up in a different Italian city most weekends, and in late September it comes to Alessandria. For four days the stalls line Viale della Repubblica and Via Savona: international street food and pop-up restaurants, artisanal drinks, regional specialities, crafts, homeware and wellness goods — a slice of Europe's markets assembled in one place.
The food is the point. Alongside the retail stands you get a run of street-food kitchens cooking specialities from across the continent, which makes it an easy, low-commitment evening out — wander, taste, repeat. It sits just outside the historic centre, so it's a separate outing from the old town rather than part of it.
