Mostra "La magnificenza dell'anima" — Giacomo Soffiantino
An autumn exhibition of paintings by the Turin artist Giacomo Soffiantino (1929–2013), four-time Biennale di Venezia exhibitor, in the rooms of Casa Prunotto in Costigliole d'Asti's old Rocca quarter — weekends from 10 October to 1 November, free entry.
Why it's special
A rare chance to see Soffiantino — a pupil and later teacher at Turin's Accademia Albertina whose painting circled nature, existence, life and death — in a small village setting, curated with his daughter Carlotta.

For four autumn weekends the Associazione Costigliole Cultura hangs the work of Giacomo Soffiantino in Casa Prunotto, up in the Rocca, the old quarter of Costigliole d'Asti. Born in Turin in 1929, Soffiantino studied at the Accademia Albertina under Francesco Menzio, Aldo Bertini and Mario Calandri, later taught there, and showed at four Venice Biennales between 1956 and 1972.
His subject, over six decades, was the human condition — the cycles I Musulmani, the Trittico della vita (shown at Asti's Baptistery in 1991 and in 1993 in the old prisons of the Doge's Palace in Venice) and Continuità — worked out through nature, layered colour and sign. "The mystery of life must enter the painting," as the critic Francesco De Bartolomeis quotes him. Soffiantino died in Turin in 2013; this show, curated with his daughter Carlotta, gathers a selection of his paintings with a catalogue of critical essays.
Entry is free, and the show opens only at weekends — see the hours above.
