L'arte del tessuto, il tessuto nell'arte
A free exhibition at Palazzo Mazzetti on textiles and fashion in Piedmont, from historical Palio costumes and police and Carabinieri uniforms to work by fashion students and pieces made by local craft firms.
Why it's special
It brings together things you rarely see in one room: garments from the Palio di Asti and local folk traditions, historic uniforms, sketches and garments from twenty years of the fashion course at Asti's Istituto Castigliano, an installation on sustainable textiles, and products of today's Piedmontese textile and clothing workshops. It was part of Italy's official programme for the national Made in Italy Day.

Textiles and clothing have long been part of Piedmont's economy, and this exhibition at Palazzo Mazzetti looked at them from four angles: training, history, sustainability and industry. It was produced by the Fondazione Asti Musei from an idea of the regional fashion group of Confartigianato, the craft businesses' association.
One section showed twenty years of the fashion course at Asti's Istituto Castigliano through students' sketches and garments. Another brought out historical costumes from the Palio di Asti and from folk traditions, alongside old uniforms of the police and the Carabinieri. A third, with an installation by Silvia Perosino, dealt with the environmental cost of textiles and with reuse, and the last paired artworks and historical objects with products from today's workshops. Entry was free. See what else is on in Asti.
