Natale a Moncalvo
Moncalvo's December programme of Christmas events, put together by the comune with local associations: an afternoon for children waiting for Father Christmas, choir and band concerts in the churches and the theatre, and a living nativity on Christmas Eve before midnight mass.
Why it's special
It's a small town's Christmas built by its own people. The Coro Polifonico Moncalvese sings its long-standing CantanInsieme di Natale in Sant'Antonio Abate, the bands play the Teatro Civico, and on Christmas Eve the parish, the oratory and volunteers stage nativity scenes in Piazza San Francesco that lead the crowd into midnight mass. December in Moncalvo is a run of small, warm evenings rather than one big market. The comune puts the calendar together with Moncalvo Eventi, the parish and the town's associations, and most of it is free.
It opens with an afternoon for children waiting for Father Christmas in Piazza Garibaldi, and then moves indoors to the churches and the theatre. The Coro Polifonico Moncalvese has sung its CantanInsieme di Natale in Sant'Antonio Abate for years. In 2025 there was also a band concert at the theatre, and the run closed after Christmas with a Queen tribute at the Teatro Civico.
The moment to aim for is Christmas Eve. From eleven at night, nativity scenes are staged in Piazza San Francesco, and the crowd follows them into the church for midnight mass. The town revived this living nativity in 2025 after years without it, and means to keep it going.
