Why it's special

The figures are carved and painted by a local restorer, and they're not the usual ones: at Marmorito Saint Joseph is eating his soup, and in the main square the Madonna is nursing while the Child stays wrapped in a scarf until Christmas. The contest 'Alla luce della Stella' fills a room of the Comune with nativity scenes made by Aramengo's families and children.

Aramengo, a small village a few kilometres from Cocconato, takes part in the Oro Incenso Mirra circuit of nativity scenes in the Monferrato, and its organisers describe the presepe as part of the village's DNA. Two large nativity scenes go up outdoors for the season, with figures carved and painted by Gianluigi Nicola of the Laboratorio Nicola Restauri. One stands beside the big lit Christmas tree in the Municipio square, the other in the frazione of Marmorito Santa Maria.

The figures have their own character. At Marmorito Joseph sits eating his soup, and in the main square the Madonna is shown nursing, with the Child covered by a scarf until Christmas, because his birth has to be waited for.

Inside the Municipio a room fills with the entries for "Alla luce della Stella", a contest open to anyone, in which adults and children build their own presepi and visitors vote for their favourite by its number. The year's dates are above. The village is also close to Cocconato, whose borgo of nativity scenes is on the same circuit.
