By the second weekend of October the vineyards around Vignale have gone red and copper, and the wine that came off them earlier gets poured back in the middle of it all. Vignale Autunno Di...Vino sets up around Palazzo Callori and the Enoteca Regionale del Monferrato it houses — the regional wine library, in the palazzo's tuff cellars since the late 1970s.
You taste the way you should here: straight from the people who made it, glass after glass of the native grapes — Barbera first, but also Grignolino and the Malvasia these hills do well. Between pours there are guided descents into Vignale's infernot, the little chambers hand-cut into the soft tuff to keep wine at cellar temperature year-round, plus photo shows, talks, and things laid on for kids.
It's a working-village version of a wine festival — the tractors still have right of way on the ridge road — and it pairs naturally with the foliage. Time it for the peak colour, bring a jacket for the cellars, and let Vignale show you its autumn.
