The wine here comes with a villa attached. Società Agricola Vittoria farms the vineyards of the Dominio Borgomonterosso estate, on the Monterosso hill just outside Acqui, wrapped around the Villa Ottolenghi that Count Arturo Ottolenghi and Herta von Wedekind raised in the 1920s with the architect Marcello Piacentini — art, terraced gardens and a hillside mausoleum you can walk on open days.
In the cellar it's Piedmont with a twist: Barbera and Barbera d'Asti Superiore, a Moscato d'Asti, a Gavi from Cortese and a Dolcetto, alongside Nebbiolo and even a little Syrah, which is rare this far north. Visits pair the bottles with the gardens, so it pays to check the Castelli Aperti and Grandi Giardini calendars and book the villa tour rather than turning up cold.
