The Cocito family has made wine on the Crena hill since 1868, and the bottle they're proudest of carries a woman's name: Violanda, a Nizza DOCG named for the ancestor who inherited these vines in the late 1800s. Sergio runs things now, with his father Dario and sister Nadia close at hand — about 40,000 bottles a year off ten hectares, most of it Barbera in one guise or another, from the everyday La Serena to the Sole d'Estate riserva.
Tastings here are Italian-first and all the better for it: spontaneous, generous, the owner often more interested in what he makes of the big commercial houses than in any polished script. Bottles run roughly seven to fifteen euro, cheese and salami come out alongside, and the cellar's open every day, mornings and late afternoons. A little Italian helps — book on +39 328 222 8598 or through the site.
