La Favorita is the teaching farm of Asti's agricultural school, the Istituto "G. Penna", on the Viatosto hill north of the city. The school bought the estate in December 1957, when it covered about 40 hectares, and the farm has made wine for around fifty years. Students on the viticulture and oenology course work on the wines as part of their training. The labels are named after school life: 'Primo giorno di scuola' is a Barbera d'Asti, 'Il taccuino dell'enologo' a Grignolino d'Asti, 'Il Professore' a Monferrato Rosso from Nebbiolo, and 'Risposta Esatta' a Ruché. The list on the farm's website also includes Freisa, Nascetta, Albarossa, Syrah and a grappa.
This is not a winery set up for tastings or tours. It is a farm shop. Bottles, bag-in-box and wine by the litre are sold on weekday and Saturday mornings, and you can order ahead and collect. The farm also sells its own jams, fruit and vegetables. The few Google reviewers mention good wines and friendly, knowledgeable staff.
