Cascina Brichetto is at Stazione di Portacomaro, on the north-eastern edge of Asti where the city's farmland runs into the Monferrato hills. The Bersano family moved onto the farm in November 1923. The family is now in its fifth generation on the farm, and Francesco Bersano runs it, often with his father Giacomo. Barbera is the main grape. It goes into the oak-aged Barbera d'Asti 'Curentun', a lightly sparkling Barbera del Monferrato called 'Gugheta', and the 'Testa di Fuoco' Monferrato Rosso Riserva, a barrique-aged Barbera with a little Merlot. That one is named after an old hot-bulb tractor that still works on the farm. The Grignolino d'Asti 'Confinale' comes from the vineyard on the city boundary, and 'Sclint' is a white made from Chardonnay, Cortese and Sauvignon.
Tastings are by appointment only, so phone first. The cellar is on two floors. Steel tanks and the sales room are downstairs. Upstairs are the casks, the barriques and the tasting room, plus a small infernot cut into the tufa that holds bottles more than sixty years old. Google reviewers mostly talk about how welcome Francesco makes them feel, and about the homemade salami, bread and cheese he serves with the wines.
