La Torre di Viatosto is a new estate on the Viatosto hill, just north-west of central Asti, below the hill's Romanesque church. Rosalba created it with her husband Vittorio Vallarino Gancia, the fourth generation of the Gancia family that made Italy's first spumante, who lived on the estate; their aim was to bring back the vineyards that covered this hill before the city spread towards it. The vines are young and farmed organically on clay, about 210 metres up. So far there are four wines. 'Cuvée Vittorio', dedicated to his memory, is a Metodo Classico rosé Extra Brut made from Nebbiolo and aged at least 30 months on the lees. The others are a Nebbiolo rosato under the Piemonte DOC, a Monferrato Rosso made from Merlot, and 'Clemenza', a white from very ripe Moscato grapes.
Tastings cost €30 per person and include the Metodo Classico. You book through a form on the website, but groups of nine or more need to phone. Bottles are also sold online. The estate is still too new to have Google reviews or a Vivino page.
