Luigi Pavese e Figli is a small family winery in Montemarzo, a hill hamlet south-east of Asti on the border with Azzano d'Asti. The family has made wine since 1934, only from its own grapes: about four hectares, mostly Barbera and Grignolino, farmed with low-input methods. Luigi now works with his sons Mauro and Giuseppe and his grandson Gianluca. The main wines are the Grignolino d'Asti 'San Marcel', a light, slightly fizzy Grignolino, and the Barbera d'Asti 'Sinfonia'. Several of their Grignolino and Barbera vintages won Douja d'Or awards in the 2000s. There is also 'La Superiore', a red from selected Barbera aged in oak, along with a rosé and a white blend called 'Colibrì'.
Tastings and sales are at the farm, and you need to book by phone. From mid-September to the end of December the family also takes visitors into its own truffle ground to watch a trained dog hunt for truffles. Phone ahead to check opening times.
