Barbero Piero is the family winery behind the La Canova label, on Via Calva just south-east of Calosso. Luigi Barbero founded it in 1948 and delivered his wine in demijohns to customers in Turin and Milan. The third generation runs it today: Piero looks after the vineyards and the cellar, Bruna the office, and Paolo and Carlo the export side. With about 50 hectares spread over Calosso, Moasca, Boglietto and San Marzano Oliveto, it's one of the bigger family estates around the village, and pruning and picking are still done by hand. Barbera grows on the warmest slopes, while Moscato and Traminer go on the cooler ones. The range runs to about fifteen wines, among them Barbera d'Asti, Moscato d'Asti, the sparkling 'Rè Bollicino' and a Calosso DOC called 'Pernice', made from the village's own Gamba di Pernice grape.
The cellar shop keeps long hours, including Sunday mornings. Google reviewers mention friendly tastings with the owners, good prices and a donkey wandering around the yard. The website has no booking page, so phone Carlo or Paolo before you go. At the Fiera del Rapulé in October, La Canova pours its wines in the Crotin Zia Tina.
