Fea is a small family winery on Via Fea, about a kilometre south of Calosso's centre. Giuliano Chiarera started it in 1960, and his son-in-law Giuseppe Valente took over in 1990. Since then the vineyards have grown from 4 to about 12 hectares, and today Giuseppe and Tiziana make around 12,000 bottles a year. The range sticks to local grapes: Barbera d'Asti, Langhe Nebbiolo, Freisa d'Asti Superiore, a dry Moscato called 'Beatrice', a Langhe rosato and a Moscato passito. Fea also makes Calosso DOC 'Gamba di Pernice' from 100% Gamba Rossa, the village's own red grape, and a chinato based on the same wine.
The standard visit costs €25. It starts with a short walk through the vineyards, then goes through the cellar and ends with a tasting led by the family, served with a plate of local salumi and cheese. When the cellar was renovated in 2010, two old crotin came to light: tunnels dug into the marl where wine and food were once kept. Visits run Monday to Saturday, with Sundays by appointment. You can book on Viator or by phone, in Italian or English. In spring and early summer there are also aperitivo evenings among the vines. At the Fiera del Rapulé in October, Fea pours its wines in the Crotin Montafia.
