Blengio is Daniele Reale's family cellar on Via Vianuova, about two kilometres east of Calosso's centre. The vines grow on calcareous soils and the current list runs to nine wines. Barbera is the backbone: a Piemonte Barbera called 'Maestra' and the Barbera d'Asti Superiore 'Santè', aged for at least six months in large Slavonian oak casks. 'Notu' is a Monferrato Rosso aged in French barriques and is the best-rated Blengio wine on Vivino. The lighter side includes 'Bertè', a crisp Langhe Favorita, a pale rosé called 'Gadan' and the Langhe Rosso 'Cublère'. Two wines are made from an aromatic white grape: 'La Morosa', sweet and gently sparkling at 5.5%, and 'Egle', a late-harvest dessert wine.
This is a small operation and a personal visit. Google reviewers describe Daniele opening the cellar to pour his wines, explain how they're made and sell bottles at fair prices, sometimes at short notice on a Sunday. There's no booking system, so call ahead.
