Bussi Piero farms 12 hectares around Località Castagna, just north of Calosso's centre. The place already shows up in a land register of 1758 with 40 hectares of vines. The family started making its own wine after the First World War with grandfather Agostino. Germano joined in the 1960s and Piero after him, and since 2022 Federico Bussi, the fourth generation, has owned the estate and runs it with Piero. Moscato and Barbera are the core of the range, from Moscato d'Asti to a Barbera d'Asti Superiore named after the Castagna vineyard. Bussi is also one of the few cellars that make Calosso DOC, the red from the local Gamba Rossa grape that people here call Gamba di Pernice. There's also Nebbiolo, Grignolino, Dolcetto, an Alta Langa Brut and a late-harvest wine called 'Suris'.
Visits are by appointment and can be booked online. The standard guided tasting, 'Tra Langhe & Monferrato', costs €20 and is given in Italian, English or French. A two-hour 'Vintage' tasting with the winemaker starts at €30. The cellar shop is open most days, but it closes on Sundays in July, August, January and February, so call before a weekend visit. During the Fiera del Rapulé in October, Bussi's wines are poured in the Crotin Girio in the village centre.
