Cascina Castagna is a very small winery with holiday flats on Via Bionzo, just north of Calosso. It's run by a Norwegian couple, Hilde Ljungstrøm and Morten Johansen, who bought the abandoned farm and its old cellar in 2009. Their first Barbera d'Asti, from the 2009 harvest, was made for them by another producer. In 2015 they built their own production room, and they now make everything themselves, about 2,000 to 3,000 bottles a year. The vineyard is Barbera on a south-west-facing slope, worked without herbicides and picked by hand. Barbera goes into three reds that differ mainly in how long they spend in oak: 'Rosso', 'Rossolino' and the younger 'Silenzio'. There's also a Nebbiolo called 'Segreto', a Nebbiolo rosato and a steel-aged Chardonnay. The wines are sold only at the farm and to a few local restaurants.
Guests in the four apartments get a tour of the production room and a tasting. Outside visitors are welcome too, but you have to arrange a time by email beforehand. The website is in Norwegian. The owners have put the property up for sale, but they say it is running normally in 2026, so check with them before planning a visit further ahead.
