Cascina Comina is the Mocco family's winery on Via Boscodonne, on the edge of the village of Calosso. Giuseppe runs it with Davide, while Cristina, Laura and Valentina look after visitors and sales. The family dates its winemaking to 1934. The vines are close to the cellar, in plots called Crocetta, Pian Forno and Sorì among others. The range covers most of the local grapes. Barbera comes as a straight Barbera d'Asti and as two Superiore, 'RosaRossa' and the oak-aged 'Rovere'. They also make Calosso DOC from Gamba di Pernice, Moscato d'Asti, Dolcetto, Grignolino, Nebbiolo, a fizzy Cortese and the Chardonnay sparkler 'Orsa Maggiore'.
Comina is one of the easiest cellars in Calosso to drop into. The shop is open every day, and tastings run from March to December. 'Compare Orso' (€25) pairs four wines of your choice with local cheese, salumi and Moscato with pastries. From spring to the end of September, 'Wine&Sunset' (€30) moves the tasting to the panoramic terrace at sundown and includes the RosaRossa and the Calosso DOC. There are cheaper options too: a quick bulk-wine tasting with bread and salami, an aperitivo with a bottle and a board, picnic baskets to take into the vineyards, and an overnight camper stop. Book through the website or with Cristina on WhatsApp. At the Fiera del Rapulé, Comina pours at the Palazzo del Teatro.
