La Badia is the Bussi brothers' farm on the Castiglione road, south-west of Calosso. It's set around an old Piedmontese courtyard that five families once shared. Their grandfather Felice sold a little Moscato in bulk in the early 1900s. Giuseppe and Marco Bussi started bottling in 1987, and today they farm about 20 hectares with their parents Aldo and Lidia and Marco's family. Barbera is the main grape, mostly on clay. It goes into the everyday 'Tentazione' and two Barbera d'Asti Superiore, 'Clotilde' and 'Castello di Calosso', which is the best rated of their wines on Vivino. Alongside the Moscato d'Asti, they make a Calosso DOC from Gamba Rossa, the local Gamba di Pernice grape. The rest of the list is Dolcetto, Cortese and Chardonnay, a dried-grape Barbera and Moscato, grappas, and two Vermouth di Torino.
Tastings must be booked and run about 90 minutes for up to 15 people, in a tasting room or in the courtyard when the weather allows. Three wines with local products cost €15. For €20 you get four wines and a tour of the farm. Book through Langhe.net or by phone or email. In the Fiera del Rapulé, La Badia pours in the Crotin Villa Gialla. The family also runs a shop for its wines in Settimo Torinese, near Turin.
