Livio Soria's cellar is in Rodotiglia, the hamlet north-east of Calosso's centre, where Alberto Soria's great-grandfather Silvio began making wine from the family's grapes in the late 1800s. Mario and then Livio built the estate up, and since 2012 Alberto has run it with his father. They farm about 10 hectares of hillside vineyard in Calosso and San Marzano Oliveto, on clay and limestone over tufa. Barbera is the focus. 'Rodotiglia', a Barbera d'Asti Superiore from a hectare of vines planted almost a century ago, is the flagship and their highest-rated wine on Vivino. 'San Giacomo' is the younger Barbera d'Asti. The rest of the range is a Monferrato Rosso called 'Just Black', a Pinot Nero, a Viognier, a Chardonnay and a metodo classico, 'Perlè d'Oro'.
Visits take in the vineyards next to the cellar and the cellar itself, followed by a tasting. A 90-minute tasting of six wines for up to 15 people is sold through Winalist for €29 a head, in Italian, English or French. You can also phone or email the family. During the Fiera del Rapulé, Livio Soria pours in the Cortile Rocca.
