Despite the shop-like name on Google, Piano is a proper wine estate. The Piano family's cellar is on Via Tinella, west of Calosso, and its vineyards cover about 40 hectares spread over Calosso, Castiglione Tinella, Costigliole d'Asti and Montegrosso d'Asti. The family story begins with Pietro Piano buying a small plot. His son Dante expanded the vineyards, and grandsons Gianluca and Fabio opened the first shop away from the farm. Today there are three, in Pinerolo, Saluzzo and Trofarello, and the fourth generation is now in the business. The range sticks to local grapes and appellations. It runs from Barbera d'Asti in several versions to Dolcetto, Grignolino d'Asti, Langhe Nebbiolo and Arneis, Moscato d'Asti, and Chardonnay including the 'Desbela'. The ViNature line is made without added sulphites, and there are also grappas and a Barbera Chinata.
The cellar in Calosso sells direct and runs tasting tours on request. Call or email ahead, because the website doesn't publish a fixed programme. At the Fiera del Rapulé, Piano pours in the Area Cantina Sociale.
