Camillo Scagliola filled his first barrel in 1936. After he died young, his son Giovanni took on the farm at 14 with his wife Marcellina. Their sons Maggiorino and Mario built up the wine side, and Silvia and Giovanni are the fourth generation. The family farms about 40 hectares on Via San Siro, east of the village, at 320 to 380 metres, and harvests by hand. Two dates stand out. In 1989 they bottled their first Moscato d'Asti, 'Volo di Farfalle'. In 1996 came 'SanSì', a Barbera d'Asti Superiore, followed a year later by a selection now called 'SanSì Antologia'.
The list is long. There's Nizza 'Foravia', the Monferrato Rosso 'Azord', the Alta Langa 'Camilo', Dolcetto, Grignolino, Nebbiolo, Cortese, Chardonnay, Brachetto and a Moscato passito, all with labels painted by the artist Massimo Ricci. Group and individual visits and tastings are by reservation only, Monday to Saturday, so phone or email first. At the Fiera del Rapulé, Scagliola pours in the Cantina Comunale dei Vini.
