Grignolino is the pale, faintly tannic red that Casale grows better than most, and the Leporati family has built its cellar around it. Their Antica Chiesa is Grignolino del Monferrato Casalese done straight; next to it sit two Barbera del Monferrato — the everyday Terra Granda and the barrel-aged Bellingera — plus a couple of outliers for these hills, a Pinot Nero they call Olivera and a Chardonnay, La Paveïsa.

It's a small family operation on the rise north of the Po, and they'll open bottles for you if you come by. The site runs in English as well as Italian, so your Italian doesn't need to be good. Google visitors put it at 4.7; the wines sit around 3.5 on Vivino. Start with the Grignolino — it's the local argument in a glass.
