Riccardo Coppo is the fourth generation to work these vines — after Nino, Flavio and Cipriano — on some forty hectares around Cella Monte, eleven of them planted. The range runs wide, the way old Monferrato estates do: Grignolino del Monferrato Casalese, Barbera both del Monferrato and d'Asti, a Piemonte Bonarda, a Cortese and a Freisa, and a Spumante Brut for good measure. About 50,000 bottles leave here a year.

Tastings happen down in the old cellar cut into Pietra da Cantoni, the soft pale stone the whole hill is built from, ten degrees cooler than the yard outside. There's also a shop in the middle of Casale, on Piazza Castello, run by Riccardo's wife and daughter. Google visitors give it 4.5; the thirteen labels average nearer 3.5 on Vivino. Start with the Bonarda or the Grignolino.
