Tommaso Bosco poured his first vintage under his own name in 2014, taking a family estate that had gone quiet and turning it back toward wine. The one people come for is the Ruché di Castagnole Monferrato — his "Oltrevalle" carries the grape's whole calling card, violets and red fruit up front, a little white pepper behind. Around it sit a Barbera d'Asti, a Grignolino, a couple of whites off Chardonnay and Sauvignon, and a Monferrato Rosso he calls Tranvaj that leans dark and balsamic, all orange peel and menthol. Six wines in all, plus the estate's Tonda Gentile hazelnuts.

This isn't a guided-tour operation, and it's the better for it. Call ahead (+39 340 967 9826) and Tommaso sits you down himself, usually with a board of local cheese and salami and a bowl of those roasted hazelnuts, and talks you through the six without hurry. English is no problem. He's straight about what it takes to keep a small cellar going, and most people leave with more bottles than they meant to buy.
