Maciot is the Macchia family's farm in the hills around Cocconato, with vineyards in Cocconato and neighbouring Piovà Massaia and a few inherited plots in Montiglio Monferrato. Some of the vines were planted by Paolo Macchia's grandfathers. The farm is certified organic and has held Demeter biodynamic certification since 2013. Fermentations run on wild yeasts and each vineyard is bottled on its own: two Barbera d'Asti ('465' and 'Four Rapet'), the Monferrato Nebbiolo 'Nobilino', the Grignolino 'Vigin' and a Sauvignon Blanc, plus a Chinato and the farm's hazelnuts.
Visits are arranged by phone and led by Paolo himself. Visitors say he takes his time explaining how biodynamic farming works, sometimes with a drive out to the vines and hazelnut groves, before a long tasting in the cellar. The wines come across as distinctive and a little unconventional, and the orange-style Sauvignon and the Grignolino get singled out most often. The family also runs Cantina del Ponte, a restaurant and wine bar on Cocconato's Piazza Cavour, which pours the Maciot wines.
