Emanuele Gambino makes wine on the same Costigliole hills his grandparents farmed, and the estate now wraps its tastings around a restored 1800s building — the Monvì Wine Relais, spa and all, looking out over the UNESCO vineyard hills. The farming's organic. The wine people talk about is the dry Moscato aged in terracotta amphorae, unusual for a grape everyone expects sweet, poured alongside the Barbera d'Asti and a Barbera Superiore.
Tastings run in Italian and English, usually with a board of local salumi and cheese, and you book through the relais. Ask for the amphora Moscato — it's the reason to make the drive.
