Cascina Cirio went organic in 2001, though the family had distrusted chemicals in the vineyard long before the certificate made it official — these days it's copper and sulphur only, a few kilos a hectare, on the slopes off Strada Fornace in Costigliole d'Asti. The range is broad for so quiet a place: two Barbera d'Asti (Portey is the Superiore, Divina the everyday one), a Dolcetto called Orgoglio, a Grignolino, a Freisa, plus a Chardonnay and the Moscato that regulars swear by.
There's a Moscato Passito named Passion and a metodo-classico sparkler, Sinfonia, if you want to see how far they push it. The owner tends to pour for you herself, in Italian or German, and the prices stay honest. Open daytime through the week and closed Sundays; worth a call before you drive up.
