Cascina del Cavagnè sits on the right bank of the Tanaro at Costigliole d'Asti, below the castle that has kept the district's wine records for centuries. The Sobrino family bottles eleven labels, most under single-vineyard names — Bricco Sobrino, Bric del Piuns, Vignot, I Gessi — running from floral-dry Moscato whites through spumante to oak-aged Barbera d'Asti reds.
Ring or email ahead and Mr Sobrino will pour you through the range and talk you through the soils and the vintages; visitors have turned up on a day's notice and still been looked after. The cellar keeps daytime hours all week and a short Sunday-morning slot. Italian, English and German are all fine.
