Cascina Fiore began in 1967, when grandfather Carlo laid the first vintage down in a tufo cellar on Strada Piazza, in the thick of the Barbera and Moscato country around Costigliole d'Asti. It's stayed small — seven hectares, limited bottlings — and the Moscato d'Asti is what people drive back for, alongside Barbera d'Asti, a Monferrato Dolcetto and a Piemonte Cortese.

The Fiores still sell plenty of wine sfuso, straight from the tank for you to bottle yourself, bag-in-box included — an old Piemontese habit that keeps honest wine cheap. Mr Fiore and his wife do the welcome themselves, and there's a Moscato grappa worth trying. Open mornings and afternoons most days, with shorter Sunday hours.
