Ullio is the Calvo family's wine business on Via alla Stazione in Montiglio. The family's own history says Angelo Calvo grew grapes and made wine for his large household in the 1950s. His son Cesare built a proper cellar in the 1960s, and Cesare's son Denis, who trained in viticulture and oenology, later took over. In the 2010s the business was relaunched as "Ullio, since 1885", with an eye on export markets and bottles personalised for companies and restaurants. The range it listed then was built on Barbera. The Barbera d'Asti Superiore 'Al Culumbè' and the Barbera d'Asti 'Castel' both include a little Freisa and Grignolino, and 'Attimi' is a sparkling Barbera del Monferrato. The rest was a Grignolino called 'Pianass', a Dolcetto called 'Riveri', a Piemonte Cortese and a sweet, lightly sparkling Moscato. Al Culumbè is the one Ullio wine with enough ratings on Vivino to score.
The comune still lists Ullio as a wine producer and merchant in its 2025 guide. Vivino also shows a Barolo and a Barbaresco under the Ullio name, which fits the merchant side of the business. The website has been offline for years, and Ullio doesn't advertise visits or tastings. The labels above come from its last published range, so phone the cellar to ask what's available before you go.
