Three generations of women run Macario — Maria, born in 1940, her daughter Giovanna and now granddaughter Giulia — after the family moved the operation from Castel Boglione to Nizza Monferrato and paired old habits with a modern cellar. Barbera is the backbone: Barbera d'Asti, the Superiore and the Nizza DOCG 'Rabè'. Around it sit native grapes like Grignolino, Ruchè and Nebbiolo, fresh whites and rosés, sweet Moscato and Brachetto, and the 'Angel' sparklers.
They host tastings at the Nizza cellar; book by phone or through the website. The ratings visitors leave are high and, more to the point, steady.
