The name is a small joke — le vigne di Piè...tro, Pietro's vines — for the great-grandson now stepping into a farm his great-grandfather started in 1976. Enrico Silva came up from the rice paddies of the Po plain wanting to make the best wine in Monferrato, and four generations on the family is still at it, working thirty hectares between Vignale, Altavilla and Casorzo.

The reds are the heart of it: Barbera d'Asti, a Bonarda, the Dioniso Monferrato and a Barbera del Monferrato called La Venere, plus a Chardonnay and two sparklers — one metodo classico, one Martinotti. They sell it by the crate, three to six bottles boxed to your door, which tells you they'd rather you drank it at your own table than photographed it at theirs. You'll find them at Cascina Bergantino above the Belvedere; the view over the vines does most of the selling.
