Castello dei Paleologi / Castello del Monferrato

The brick castle by the Po anchors Casale's centre — free to wander top to bottom, with a bistro, a bookshop and a wine bar tucked into the vaults below. Fixed castle history is thin on the ground, but it earns its keep with rotating exhibitions and events, and a market fills the piazza out front on Tuesdays and Fridays.
