Why it's special

Every truffle shown and sold is checked first by a panel of qualified judges (members of the international truffle tasters' organisation O.I.A.T., trained by the Centro Nazionale Studi Tartufo of Alba), and the best Monferrato white truffles win cash prizes. The Comune says around 25 kg of Tuber magnatum is shown in a typical year, with specimens of over 800 g in the past.

Montechiaro d'Asti, the main village of the Val Rilate north of Asti, turns into a truffle town for one Sunday in November. The fair has been running for close to forty years, organised by the Comune with the Pro Loco, the village's Palio committee and the Alpini.

The heart of it is a pavilion where the white truffles of the Monferrato, Tuber magnatum only, are shown and sold. Before anything goes on sale a panel of qualified judges checks each truffle, and the best are judged and given cash prizes. Outside, stalls of local food and crafts fill the streets from morning to dusk. Bands, folk groups and comedians keep the square busy, and the Pro Loco serves lunch.

Montechiaro also runs in the Palio di Asti, and its Pro Loco cooks at Asti's Festival delle Sagre in September. The year's date is above.
