Mercato settimanale di Canelli

Tuesday and Friday mornings, 08:00–13:00: Canelli's market fills Piazza Gancia, Piazza Zoppa and Piazza Cavour in the town centre.

Why it's special

It's an old market: Canelli's statutes had a section of rules for it, and the 1829 Calendario Generale already lists its Tuesday and Friday markets. The food stalls in Piazza Zoppa sell Piedmontese cheeses including Robiola di Roccaverano.

A tip
  • Food and local producers are in Piazza Zoppa.
  • Clothing, shoes, leather goods, jewellery and household stalls are in Piazza Gancia and along the tree-lined avenue to Piazza Cavour.

Canelli's market runs every Tuesday and Friday from 08:00 to 13:00, across three neighbouring spaces in the town centre: Piazza Carlo Gancia, Piazza Alessandro Zoppa and Piazza Cavour, joined by a tree-lined avenue.

Piazza Gancia is mostly clothing, footwear, leather goods, jewellery and household goods. Piazza Zoppa is the food side: Piedmontese cheeses including Robiola di Roccaverano, seasonal fruit and vegetables, honey and other hive products, and flowers and seeds. The comune's own pitch lists follow the same split, with non-food pitches in Piazza Cavour and Piazza Gancia and food pitches in Piazza Zoppa.

The market goes back a long way. Canelli's old statutes gave it a whole section of rules, the 1829 Calendario Generale for the Royal States lists the town's two weekly markets on Tuesday and Friday, and in 1907 the town council enlarged Piazza Gioberti to give the markets more room.
