Why it's special

Rinco is a tiny hilltop borgo whose square is framed by a 13th-century castle and its brick tower, the palace of the Counts Pallio and a 17th-century church. The festa is run by the village's own sports club, which was founded in 1983 partly to organise it, and the menu carries a local speciality, the Nisùlet di Rinco.

Rinco is a tiny frazione of Montiglio Monferrato, a handful of terracotta houses on a hilltop gathered round Piazza San Bartolomeo. Around the square stand the 13th-century castle of Rinco with its slender brick tower, the palace of the Counts Pallio and the 17th-century church.

The village's patronal festa falls at the end of August, around St Bartholomew's day on 24 August, and it is run by the Circolo Sportivo Rinco. The club was founded in 1983 with the aims of promoting sport and Rinco itself, organising the festa and giving residents and summer visitors a place to meet. Its clubhouse on the piazza is where villagers meet for a coffee, an ice cream or a game of cards.

For four evenings the Circolo's stand serves a long menu at the table, from eggs in sauce and tripe to pasta e fagioli and the local Nisùlet di Rinco, while the dance pavilion goes from Occitan folk dances to a DJ, a live band and a closing night of liscio. Entry to the dancing is free. Rinco's is the last of the summer patronal feste in Montiglio's frazioni, after Carboneri, Sant'Anna, Banengo and Montiglio's own San Lorenzo.
