Sagra del Fritto Misto alla Piemontese — Carboneri

Why it's special

The fritto misto alla piemontese is one of the region's great feast dishes, and it takes a crowd of cooks: in Carboneri more than a hundred volunteers, many of them young, keep the fryers going. Their own addition is a fried chocolate bignè (choux bun).

Carboneri is a small frazione south-west of Montiglio's centre, and every July its Società Agricola-Operaia, the frazione's farmers' and workers' society, holds a summer festa built around the fritto misto alla piemontese. The Piedmontese mixed fry is nothing like a seafood fritto: it brings together many pieces, savoury and sweet, fried one after another. In Carboneri they range from steak to liver and from apple to amaretto, and a few years ago the cooks added a fried chocolate bignè that has become a favourite.

The stand opens at 19:30 on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Besides the fritto it serves antipasti, agnolotti, rustichelle, skewers, chips and desserts. From 21:30 there is music each night, ending on the Sunday with ballroom dancing to a liscio orchestra. Entry is free, and more than a hundred volunteers keep it running.

It falls in the middle of the summer feste of Montiglio's frazioni, after the carpionata at Colcavagno and before the acciuga al verde at Sant'Anna, Banengo, the village's own San Lorenzo and Rinco.
