Festa Patronale di San Lorenzo — Montiglio Monferrato
Montiglio's feast of its patron San Lorenzo: three August evenings of the Pro Loco's food stand under cover in Via Stazione, with traditional dishes, pizza and truffle tastings ('Non solo tartufi!'), dancing and a funfair, then a concert in the Romanesque Pieve di San Lorenzo on 14 August and the feast of San Rocco two days later.
Why it's special
The concert is the night to come for: on 14 August, close to the night of shooting stars that Italians call San Lorenzo's tears, the 12th-century pieve with its carved capitals hosts free chamber, folk or songwriter music, followed by a toast from the Pro Loco.

San Lorenzo is the patron saint of Montiglio, and his feast day is 10 August. The village celebrates on the nearest weekend with three evenings run by the Pro Loco and the Comune. They are held in the fair area on Via Stazione, where a covered stand serves the dishes of the tradition and pizza, with truffle tastings; the Pro Loco calls the food evenings 'Non solo tartufi!'. After dinner there is dancing, from liscio orchestras to DJ nights, and a funfair for children. On the Sunday morning a solemn Mass is said in the saint's own church.
That church is the Pieve di San Lorenzo, a Romanesque church standing by the cemetery outside the village, known for the sirens, monsters and animals carved on its capitals. On 14 August it hosts the Concert of San Lorenzo, a free evening of music under its stone vaults. In recent years it has featured string trios, early music and tributes to Italian songwriters.
The festivities end on 16 August with the feast of San Rocco, a Mass in the open air in the little piazza of San Rocco, followed by refreshments from the Pro Loco. Montiglio's frazioni hold their own summer feste in the same weeks, among them the fritto misto at Carboneri, the acciuga al verde at Sant'Anna and the feasts of Banengo and Rinco.
