Festa Patronale di San Giacomo (Agliano Terme)

Agliano Terme's patron saint week for San Giacomo Maggiore — Saint James the Greater — a run of dinners, dancing, cohort parties and a Luna Park in Piazza Roma that closes with the procession, the solemn Mass and the town band.

Why it's special

It's the thermal town's own week: the Circolo Sportivo Aglianese and the Pro Loco cook for the piazza, the old cohorts throw their reunion nights, and the religious core — procession and Mass on the feast — anchors a full week of music and Piedmontese food in the centre.

A tip
  • The paid dinners in Piazza Roma need booking (a number is published each year with the programme); the Luna Park and the piazza music are free.
  • The week opens on the Thursday with the last of the Giovedì di Via Principe, so pair the two if you're around.

Every hill town in the Monferrato keeps its saint's week, and Agliano Terme's is San Giacomo — Saint James the Greater — around his feast on 25 July. For the best part of a week Piazza Roma fills with a Luna Park, a stage and long tables, and the town cooks for itself and its visitors.

Two things run in parallel. There's the religious core — the procession and the solemn Mass on the feast Sunday, at the church of San Giacomo — and there's the secular week around it: the leva nights (each year the town's cohorts, the classes born in a given year, throw their reunion), a traditional Piedmontese dinner, orchestras and tribute acts, and the closing concert by the municipal band. The Circolo Sportivo Aglianese and the Pro Loco run the kitchen.

It lands at the height of the thermal-and-wine season, when Agliano is also busy with Appuntamenti con la Rossa and the Giovedì di Via Principe — the patronal week opens on the last of those Thursdays. Check the Comune or the Pro Loco for the year's dinner bookings before you go: the food is table-service and fills up.
