Fontana Romana

Uncovered during 1980s roadworks on Corso Roma, this Roman public fountain sits in a pit some three metres below today's street, opposite the church of San Francesco. You look down on it rather than reach it — stone slabs and a basin, part of a larger dig that turned up a Roman house — so it's a quick, quiet glance rather than a set-piece.
