Carnevale di Castelnuovo Don Bosco

Castelnuovo Don Bosco's carnival, run by the Pro Loco: a themed masked dinner on the Saturday, then on Shrove Tuesday free polenta in Piazza Don Bosco, an afternoon of games at the Oratorio and the carnival bonfire.

Why it's special

The carnival ends the old way, with a falò, the bonfire that burns the season out, after a town polenta offered by the Comune.

Castelnuovo Don Bosco, the town in the hills north-west of Asti where Saint John Bosco was born, keeps a small carnival run by its Pro Loco.

It opens on the Saturday with a themed masked dinner under the Ala, the covered market hall of Piazza Don Bosco. On Shrove Tuesday the Comune offers polenta in the square at lunchtime, then the Oratorio opens for an afternoon of games for children and grown-ups, and at half past four the carnival bonfire is lit.

The town's other big dates are the Sagra della Salsiccia in July, the Feste di San Rocco in August and the truffle fair in late November.
