Monferrato Classic Festival — Montemagno

The Monferrato Classic Festival's Montemagno strand: free young-talent classical recitals on Sunday afternoons in the baroque parish church of Santi Martino e Stefano — in July and again on every Sunday of October.

Why it's special

Sabrina Lanzi's young-talent festival gives Montemagno two short seasons of Sunday recitals — mostly solo piano, with a July song recital — in the baroque church at the head of Piazza San Martino's staircase, free and unhurried.

A tip
  • October concerts start at 17:30 in the Chiesa dei Santi Martino e Stefano and are free.
  • The church closes the top of Piazza San Martino, up its theatrical staircase — leave a few minutes to climb it.
  • Stay on for dinner in one of Montemagno's trattorie.

The Monferrato Classic Festival puts young classical musicians on stages across the Monferrato, and in Montemagno its stage is the parish church of Santi Martino e Stefano. The festival, directed by the pianist Sabrina Lanzi, brings the village two short Sunday seasons: four recitals in July and four more on the Sundays of October.

Most of them are solo piano — Bach and Beethoven sonatas, Chopin, Liszt, Rachmaninoff — with the odd song evening, and the players are young and on their way up. The October concerts start at half past five and are free; the July ones drew a good enough crowd to bring the festival back in the autumn.

The festival also has an August strand at Vignale Monferrato. Check this year's dates above.
